What's your why?
If you asked me this when I left uni, I would've given the broad clichè answer of "to help people" because I didn't yet understand what my why was. Im still working this out, but the journey has been insightful. I have slowly over time become more knowledgeable and aware of all the misleading information that is driven by greed, pharmaceutical hyper-prescription and scam quick fix treatments.
I have witnessed first hand the impact of these modalities on the everyday Australian who has fallen victim to consumerism and the idea that their 20 yrs of back pain can be fixed with a pill, surgery or an 8 week weight loss scheme where they flog their untrained cardio system in a high intensity training approach from day 1. People have poured so much of their finances into these approaches/trends, along with their time and motivation. Only to be let down time and time again and left in pain or dysfunction at no expense of the individuals who promised to cure them with their sham health approach. Long before these quick fix concepts in health arose humans were better off in certain aspects. We worked physical jobs, our daily living tasks were labour intensive, transport was your two feet, we had a strong sense of community and food behaviour was stabilised with periods of fasting vs feasting & non-processed food options.
This has now become part of my why, I want to build health awareness in my patients, open their minds to why a lot of these short-term / quick fixes have muddied the water in the now-commoditised world of health and fitness. I want to give them the tools to restore ownership of their own body through an array of treatment topics & tools such as cardiovascular physiological education, nutrition behaviour strategies, exercise prescription, breath training, sleep hygiene education, self tissue release techniques, heart rate or variability tracking. I want people to see how easy it can be to live highly functional healthy lives once they understand a few concepts around routine, sleep, food behaviour, breathing and of course, Movement!
My why has recently had an advancement toward helping people maintain the fitness and mobility required to keep surfing and/or trail running + hiking. The lifestyle & culture of these activities has completely swept me the last couple of years. The ocean and mountains are now places I feel very connected to. Overtime, My goals are to narrow my scopes so I can use my knowledge and skills to help others maintain the ability to continue their functional hobbies where they have found their equivalent connection, to what I have.
What's your guilty pleasure when you have free time?
Stretch in the sun - get all the bands, rollers and trigger balls out of the car and just go to town on all these chronically overloaded tension points that I have because I love moving way more than what my athletic ability can keep up with. Another little guilty pleasure is whipping up a little desert glory bowl, aka "the dad bowl" as titled by a Kiwi fella AC knows. Anywho, the bowl usually ends up with a rare combination of condiments, spreads, frozen fruits, nuts, powders, honey.... Still have not made a bad one ;)

Education around critical & exploratory thinking - teach children to be curious about their 'why'

If you were marooned on a tropical island, which two staff members would you want with you and why?
Murph - he's a trivial guru, optimistic lateral thinker and recons he can play the game of survival test mach quite well if he were to go on the alone tv series. He can brew good beer too with the right tools at hand.
Darthy - Continue to provide his wisdom on functional longevity, health practice and movement coaching. Also he cracks ripper dad jokes and could give me and dan weekly surf lessons. Downfall is that together we would consume all the food we forage per week for in a single sitting.
